Watson - My dear Holmes, what is it tonight, morphine or cocaine?
Holmes - Well, I can strongly recommend a seven percent solution of cocaine. Would you care to try it? ¿Le importaría probarlo?
Watson - No, indeed! ¡No, ciertamente! I speak not only as your friend, but as a medical man. How can you risk such damage to the great powers with which you have been endowed?
To be endowed significa: estar dotado de. Y to endow: fundar, crear; dotar; financiar. I will endow the project: Financiaré el proyecto.
Holmes - I cannot tell you how it clarifies and stimulates the mind.
Watson - Yes, and destroys it in time! ¡Sí, y la destruye a la vez!
Con la palabra time podemos encontrarnos muchas expresiones; veamos sólo unas pocas: time flies: el tiempo vuela; to gain time: ganar tiempo; for the time being: por ahora, de momento; at times: a veces; what's the time?: ¿qué hora es?; for the last time: por última vez; ful time work: trabajo a tiempo completo...
Sherlock - My mind rebels at stagnation. Mi mente se rebela en la inactividad. Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram, the most intricate analysis, and I'm in my proper atmosphere. Then I can dispense with artificial stimulants. Entonces puedo prescindir de estimulantes artificiales. But I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave mental exultation. Yo anhelo la exultación mental. That is why I have chosen my own profession, or rather created it, for I am the only one in the world.
To abhor: aborrecer, abominar. Did she abhor him? ¿Ella le aborreció?
To crave: reclamar; suplicar; implorar; anhelar. I give them what they crave most: Les doy lo que más anhelan.
Watson - The only unofficial detective. El único detective privado.
Holmes - The only unofficial consulting detective. El único detective privado asesor. I take no credit in my cases. The work itself, the pleasure of finding a field for my particular powers is my highest reward. You can close that drawer. Puede cerrar el cajón. You have made the wrong diagnosis, Doctor! I have my stimulant here.
The adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984–1985).
